Fluffy, boring, tried and true

Romantic, pedantic, predictable, blue

Fluffy, moronic, or semi-true-

That’s what a fanfic can do for you.

Some may say-and this may be true-

Fanfiction writers are all near-adult children

Writing from the bottom of their parent’s basements

At 12:35 at night.

“Fanfiction” they say (this is others)

Is only for people who know the rules of the game.

What was Harry’s favorite food? Hagrid’s? Hermione’s?

What color did Katniss look the best in?

In what chapter of Twilight was love nipping mentioned?

If you know all this (and more), they say,

Someday, you may write a fan fiction.

YEAH RIGHT!

A fan fiction is not something planned.

It comes and it goes, whatever’s at hand.

I thought of one today at a racquetball game

Racquet or rec, it’s all the same.

Novel or drabble? Written a zillion or ten?

We all just want to tell our story again.

A lot of people have already written their own

Without even knowing it, though.

When you’re watching a movie or reading a tale

Perhaps you’ll think

“I’ll bet they didn’t really die.”

Despite the excellent death scene.

If you have the time and creative mind

You might write it down or chronicle to the end

How so-and-so’s life ought to be written.

A minor character, with not enough lines

Can be given new life in expanses of mind.

Darius, Gwindor, Johanna, Gree

Kili or Kreacher or battle droids three.

That cool-looking Rohirrim by the back door

Or the mind of an Orc as it rushes to war.

Fanfiction! By Bill Gate’s bright eyes!

The things it can do never fail to surprise!

Of course there are catches-morons who write

Every explicit thing that comes into their minds

Oh, it is called Slash for more reasons than one!

The tale only ends when Confession’s begun.

Or random stuff that makes no sense-

Pink-striped clones fighting glowing flamingos-

Or stuff w/ a <3, but no room 4 grmmr

The fact such is lost makes it only sadder.

Some authors-real ones, with a paycheck an’ stuff-

Dislike fan fiction, saying “enough is enough!”

(George R. R. Martin sues)

But others say “cool” and think it’s just fine-

Some is better than the actual thing;

(The difference between Star Wars fanfics and novels, some say, is a check to George Lucas.)

So type it in! Your favorite franchise or tale-

Into a search engine, then add on

Fanfiction.

I wrote this out of a moment of off-key inspiration and thought it was good enough to enter here. I've always been fascinated by fanfiction, its patterns and layers that can change as quickly as brush fire.

For those readers who are students of rhyming or poetic pattern, I hope you will enjoy its twists and turns.

Good fortune!

That's fanfiction in a nutshell.
